Original reporting is the future of True Crime Thailand
Hello expats, readers, and fans of True Crime Thailand,
It’s been another busy week.
We are currently working on four original reports that haven’t been reported by the press.
The stories originated as tips that we’ve received from readers across a variety of channels: the newsletter, our Facebook group, and Telegram chat (click here if you have Telegram and want to join).
This is the direction that I want to take True Crime Thailand. Doing original reporting on stories that don’t get the attention they deserve in the English language press. I want to do the work of vetting facts, doing interviews, and putting out stories that matter to expats in Thailand and those interested in Thailand crime no matter where in the world you are.
I’ll keep this newsletter brief. I’ve 5,000 words into the next story I’m putting out, which is an original report about a long-con romance scam involving bitcoin investing that has ties to Thailand.
In case you missed it, we put out this original report about the Shopping Mall ponzi scheme app that crumbled and left thousands of people hanging high and dry without an ability to withdraw money from the platform.
You can read that story here: Original Report on Shopping Mall Ponzi Scheme.
Along with the bitcoin trading romance scam, we’re working on the following stories:
We’re working with Facebook group admins to catch a scammer that is posting around expat groups. They are quite prolific and it is likely a farang that is doing the scamming. They are well-known but their antics keep working. They use 100’s of fake profiles to post on groups and get people to send them money. More on this as our work develops.
We’re working on a story of a person who was likely drugged and extorted for 35,000 baht after a car accident. The victim is willing to go on the record with us to get their story out there — and I have to admit, I was shocked when I heard the full details.
We’re working on the 2nd installment of the Chuck Ditlefsen case. Expect this by the end of the month. There’s a lot more info to share here and I’ve been letting the new facts and info percolate in my mind as I think of how to write the next installment. Don’t worry — it’ll be good.
That’s all for now.
Until next time,
True Crime Thailand
